just another birthday in the city

we celebrated my birthday for days. the mr. did good! i wasn't super excited for this birthday. mostly because i was missing family and because i turned 25. for some reason turning 25 really freaked me out. the week leading up to my birthday i was a bit down.

cute mr. stepped in and made this the best birthday ever! it started the day before my birthday. spence took me to yolk, our favorite breakfast spot. we stuffed our faces and enjoyed being downtown together. after that i met up with some girlfriends for a little celebratory lunch. i am kicking myself that i didn't get a picture.

after my girls lunch the mr. and i headed to my favorite little bakery, sweet mandy b's to pick up my birthday cake. its our new birthday tradition in chicago. i made spence take a picture of me in the same place as last year. something about creating memories and traditions in chicago is helping it feel like home.

my birthday was on sunday. it was actually a really nice day. the mr. spoiled me of course and i heard from lots of family and friends. that night we had a bunch of friends over for cake and games. my friends even humored me and agreed to play one of my favorite group games. it was like we were all back at efy.

monday the celebration continued with another girls lunch. man am i spoiled with incredible girlfriends. and again i'm kicking myself for not taking a picture. i need to work on that.  that night spence took me out to hub 51, our favorite restaurant in the city. we stuffed our faces with nachos and the most incredible carrot cake (and i don't usually like carrot cake). we finished the night walking hand in hand through nordstrom.

even though i was dreading this birthday it turned out to be my best one yet! thanks to my incredible husband, many friends and awesome family! i was so spoiled and felt so loved.

so maybe being 25 won't be so bad......

crappy phone picture but check out that cake...to die for!

spoiled at lunch with pumpkin pancakes....i'm still craving these!

i have no idea what we're laughing about but i love this pictures!

i struggled big time with these candles. the mr. had to step in and save the day.

love this man for making my birthday perfect!

a little birthday celebration!

so even though the mr. had a big ol' scary test today, and was maybe studying all day on his birthday, we still found time to celebrate. we had some friends over for dinner and dessert to welcome spence into this 27th year. we had a blast eating way too much, playing games, and catching up after everyones summer break.  the mr was spoiled with lots of love.

my mr has a thing for brownies and ice cream. every year since we've been married i've made this for his birthday dessert. one year i attempted a cake as well but he said he liked the brownies and ice cream better ;-)

love the great blowing out the candles pictures!

of course we had to get a group photo! i personally love the funny picture the best. dan was mid throw of baby linc....too bad our self timing was off.

i sure love my mr. and i sure love celebrating him. and even more i love celebrating for days. we have big plans for dinner out just the two of us tonight to continue the celebration!

oh chocolate how i love you

once upon a time i had a birthday
and the mr. took me to pick out a birthday cake
and i posted about it
but not the cake

and then i uploaded some pictures to my computer
and found the pictures of my cake
and now i'm craving birthday cake

i may need to celebrate being almost 24 and 1 month old
or just find another reason to buy a cake

sometimes i think it's bad how much i love chocolate cake
and then sometimes i think
"hey whats wrong with liking cake?"

the mrs. turned 24

i had a great birthday.
i may have cried the night before because i was for sure it would be a horrible birthday (all alone and the mr. had to study) but...my cute mr. really made the day great.

first he woke up and got the place all decorated! how cute is he!

then he made me breakfast....
side note: i hate big breakfasts first thing in the morning. hence the cereal and muffin!
spence even pulled out the candles for breakfast. i completely forgot we had them! after breakfast we went to the cutest bakery to pick out my birthday cake. i think this is going to be a new tradition of ours!
seriously...can this place get any cuter?

we walked around this cute little neighborhood for a bit and then headed home. i took a nap and the mr. studied. perfect afternoon activity for a birthday!

after that we got dressed up and went to a play. we saw "the book thief" and let me just tell you...it was AMAZING!!! the story is beautiful but i loved how they put the book on stage and really showed us the emotions and story. such a great birthday present from the mr!

we headed to the cheese cake factory for dinner. i was feeling a lot of pressure to pick a new fun place that we both decided to just go with something i already loved.

i love us!

we have so much fun together. i guess thats what makes birthdays so great! we got home and spence went back to studying. thanks to modern technology i was able to facetime with a bunch of people from my family. this little bug kept smiling at me...who can't just love that face?
thanks to my mr. i had a great birthday. i was sad to wake up on sunday and have it all be over. so know i'm all old and stuff. what do 24 yr olds act like? guess i better figure that out asap.

the mrs. got a surprise!

so this post will be mostly for me. i want to document my mom and grandmas surprise visit to chicago. its long so don't feel bad about skipping to the pictures...lets be honest i'm guilty of that sometimes!

if i'm being honest, i was bummed about celebrating my birthday without my family. this was the first birthday alone. friday night i was playing the baby. i cried the day before my birthday...haha. my actually birthday was pretty amazing. spence did a great job making me feel special even if my family wasn't near. more on that later.

my mom told me my present was on its way. it was supposed to get to me on saturday. i was so excited to come home and find a package with my name on it. but of course it didn't come on saturday. i wasn't super worried because we struggle getting packages. i called my mom and told her it didn't come. she said she would find a tracking number so i could figure out where it was.

sunday morning i got a text from mom. "didn't have time to find the tracking number, i'll look again later. i'm back to back most of the day so i'll talk to you later". no big deal, she's the relief society president for heaven sakes. of course she is  busy on sundays.

that night we went to dinner at friends, had a blast and then headed home. i practiced the harp, wrote a few thank you notes, and started getting ready for bed. suddenly spence started cleaning the place. this isn't a huge surprise but when he started really cleaning the kitchen stove, second room and family room i was impressed. my thought "wow, spence is in a cleaning mood. i'm going to stay up and see if i can keep him going". haha, yep that is what i thought. i was so excited to have a clean house for the coming week.

i was slightly bugged that my mom still hadn't called. it was 10:30pm at that point. i pulled out my phone and started a text to tell her i was headed to bed and that i loved her. right then i she called. she sounded worried. she told me my birthday package said it was delivered today.

me: mom it didn't come today
mom: but it says it did
me: we don't get packages on sundays.
mom: will you please just go check
me: mom, i've been outside tonight. there is nothing there (i then looked out to our mail area...nothing).
mom: syd it said it was delivered. will you please just go outside and check
then she hung up on me. how rude

i was bugged, it was raining. i didn't want to go outside. and seriously who actually thinks delivery companies work on sundays? spence convinced me we should just check. i put on shoes and my coat and we headed outside.

once we got outside i saw their umbrellas. my cute mom and grandma stood outside my door, in the rain, singing me happy birthday. i started crying. i couldn't believe they were there, in chicago, to visit me.

we rushed inside and just hugged and smiled. they really pulled on over on me. it had been planned for weeks. spence was in on it. my cute sister in law was in on it as well. (side note, she thought she gave it away earlier when i talked to her on sunday. haha i had no idea. megs, you played it well)

spence had realized that i would want a clean place for my mom and grandma. how cute is he! we worked together to get two beds set up (yep we have two air mattresses...your turn to come visit) and got ready for bed.

we were all worried that i would have to work most of monday and tuesday. because of my dc trip this week i was supposed to be super busy. i got some work done on sunday night and then woke up early on monday. i talked to my boss and he was so great, he let me take some time with mom and grandma.

so we had ourselves a couple of perfect girls days! we did what we do best....SHOP!!!! of course grandma wanted to check out the millennium mile so we started there. we were able to steal spence for lunch at our favorite brunch place "yolk" downtown. after lunch/brunch we started with our tradition...nordstrom.

when i was growing up some of my earliest memories are of my grandma taking me to nordstrom for lunch and shoe shopping. it did my heart good walking into nordstrom with my mom and grandma and starting in the shoe section. grams found a couple of cute pairs and mom and i had a blast looking at all the crazy shoes. seriously who wears some of these?

we explored some more stores and then headed home to rest. that night all three of us cuddled up on our couch and watched downton abbey. i couldn't help but smile, i loved all three of us, cuddled up watching "chick flicks". i think spence appreciated that he didn't have to watch it with me :-)

tuesday i had a bit more work but it was okay. we picked up a car and headed to target to run some errands. my mom always takes care of me when she comes to visit. i felt so spoiled by my mom and grandma. after target we had some time and decided to find a "cutesy" area to walk around. we drove for just a few mins and found some fun shops by surprise on clark. we loved walking in and out of these cute boutiques. mom kept saying "we'll have to come back here when..." i love that she is already talking about coming back!

we went home for some rest, lunch and work and then headed out again! this time we took a cab downtown to see macy's all decorated. oh wow can i just say how excited i am to live in this city for the holidays? macys was AMAZING! fun windows, christmas trees everywhere, lights, ribbons and bulbs! let alone just the building, vintage pillars, huge fountains etc. seriously the most beautiful department store i've ever seen. we had a blast picking out festive jewelry, trying yummy chocolates and trying on hats. like i said i was spoiled rotten by these two!

after our macys adventure we ran to northface to pick up the mr. a warm coat (it's getting cold here in chicago!) and then to our new favorite italian place downtown. after a yummy dinner we grabbed some sprinkles cupcakes to go and headed home.

we ended the night watching disney's brave and eating cupcakes. is there a better way to end a girls trip? i think not!

i tried to get the cute christmas decorations outside of macys....looks like i need to work on my picture taking skills
mom enjoying macys chocolate store
this little guy was a carrot cake truffle. yes grandma bought him and yes we all shared. he was yummy!
mom and grandma while exploring some cute shops
my face looks huge....ahh!
grandma's first bite. she loved our little snowman
hat shopping. we had such a blast trying on hat after hat. they were all too big for grandma...sad day
haha, mom was holding up grandmas hat so it didn't fall over her eyes. aren't they just the cutest!
moms new shoes. check those babies out!

even though it was short those two days with my mom and grandma were two of the best of my life. i have never had my mom and grandma to myself before. what a treat. we talked, laughed and just had a blast the whole time.

mom and grandma, thank you so much for the most incredible birthday present. your time in chicago was so special to me. just what this mrs. needed. i love you both so so much! you both are the most beautiful examples to me. thank you so much! words cannot describe what your trip means to me.

i had the greatest surprise late sunday when these two showed up on my doorstep.
don't worry i'll tell you the whole story later (mostly because i want to keep this great memory)

we had the best couple of days
i cried when i drove away this morning
yes, i had to leave before they did

now i'm in dc for work
and trying not to be sad i'm not back in chicago with my mom and grandma
seriously, best birthday surprise ever!!!!

bring on niece number 3 // happy birthday lyla

today we feel homesick
we missed our first big family event since moving to chi town
how badly we wanted to jump in the car and drive to utah (wait...with what car???)

the mr.'s brother and his sweet wife had their first precious baby girl this morning. we didn't sleep so great last night because we were both so excited. waking up this morning to hear that baby lyla b. came to this world as perfectly as could be made us both smile (and we're still smiling).

i so wish we could be there with todd and allison. so wish we could enjoy baby lyla's first moments on this earth. and so so so wish i could hold sweet baby girl. but, as life goes, we'll enjoy from afar.

congrats todd and allison. you two are going to be incredible parents. we are beyond excited for you. (maybe a bit mad that lyla came so early, i really wanted to share birthdays with my niece. but i guess i can forgive her!)

can't wait till christmas when we can finally meet our new niece!

enjoy today! give that beautiful girl lots of hugs and kisses from us.

happy birthday baby lyla! your uncle and aunt sure love you!

the birthday celebrations for the mr. // plus a video!

finally getting around to post the mr.'s birthday celebrations. we celebrated for about two weeks. i guess that's what happens when you have school on your birthday and your mom comes to visit a week later. here are just a few pictures (overload) of celebrating the man i call my husband!

spencers favorite dessert....a pazookie. warm half baked cookie, ice cream and hot fudge. yum. of course we had to use our 26 candles and the sparklers.
mine had sprinkles. because i am in love with sprinkles. it makes everything look more fun.
just some simple birthday presents. now that we're on a budget we had to go small. but i had fun getting some small things for my mr.
loving opening present! of course. who doesn't love opening presents.
birthday plate. we made this together a couple years ago. i'm glad it made it to chicago with us. i was worried this little guy was lost on the way!
some simple birthday decor.

more presents!

this boy is loved by his friends and family!
birthday breakfast. my husband loves breakfast. so on his actual birthday i woke up early to make him his favorite. too bad he had to eat fast to run to school.
and i made him blow out the candles on his toast. i'm that kind of wife!
a little birthday picture.

i didn't get a ton of pictures of us celebrating with spence's mom. we were having too much fun together for pictures.

plus...something new and exciting!!! a video. just a note...i was holding a camera and taking pictures the same time i was doing video. when i put down the camera i was using my other one to take pictures. so thats is why you get the awkward video. i thought it would be more fun to start having videos. ya know so our kids can laugh at us later. as you can see in the video spence didn't think it was cool. oh well!
